Sound effects and jumpscares

To punctuate the most intense moments of a narrative, Dice Queen offers dedicated tools for triggering immediate sound effects (SFX) and audiovisual jumpscares.

Instant Sound Effects (SFX)

Sound effects are short, punctual sounds used to reinforce actions that happen in the scene:

  • The slam of a heavy door closing.
  • The crash of unexpected thunder.
  • A shotgun blast or the clanking of clashing swords.
  • The clink of gold coins or the click of a trap being disarmed.

How to configure and trigger SFX:

  • Behind the Scenes, send your short files in .ogg format.
  • In Sound Desk or Stage Mode, SFX appear as instant trigger buttons.
  • Clicking the button plays the sound immediately on the headphones of all players in the campaign!

The jumpscare feature

At horror, suspense or supernatural investigation tables, visual and auditory surprise is a classic technique to quicken the group’s hearts.

What is a jumpscare in Dice Queen?

A special trigger that combines:

  1. Quick scare video or image: A monstrous creature projecting onto the screen, a silhouette appearing in the dark, or a strobe flash.
  2. Synchronized screeching audio: A high-pitched scream, metallic boom, or disturbing static noise.

Ethical care and conscious use

Jumpscares are powerful narrative tools, but they must be used with common sense:

  • Reserve moments of narrative climax so as not to trivialize the effect.
  • Respect the social contract of your table and the sensitivity of the participants to sudden visual stimuli.
